Conroy Maddox

Conroy Maddox (1912-2005) was born in Hertfordshire. He gravitated to Birmingham in the 1930s where he became a founder member of the Birmingham Surrealist Group. He exhibited in the International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries in 1936, where he met André Breton, Max Ernst and Salvador Dali who inspired him to move to Paris. In the Forties, he returned to work in Birmingham and later London, always faithful to his Surrealist principles.
